Trine: the magic story

So I bought the latest edition of Humble Bundle, unfortunately didn't have the time to play all positions on the list but I've tried "Trine". It's a nice and shiny platformer game, with good music and graphic, magic and intriguing narrator. An ancient device combined together three characters: a thief, a wizard and a knight. You can play any of them at any time, they are really combined. And they fight against the undead army which is terrorizing the world. I'm not feeling like going into the details right now, see the trailer:

MineCraft 1.8: Still not here

Hello there. It has been a while since my last post but I haven't really have time for games in the last couple of weeks. I will stay busy till the end of the month but I don't want this blog to die and there's always at least a few whiles for games. So here's my post.

MineCraft 1.8. Delayed. Over and over again. According to the original plan it should be out a week ago or even earlier. But it's not. They released the pre-release version with a lot of bugs and keep working on the update. Like there were no past three month. I wonder what have they been doing... Nothing serious, that's for sure. They even removed a few features like the snow bioms and abandoned another few things that they said they will include in the update. I think it's not ok - they took the money, promised golden mountains and nothing. Notch started two other project and it seems that he doesn't really care about his main product anymore. That's sad.

MineCraft is still a great game and I'm pretty sure that everything will end up good, eventually, I will keep playing it, I just can't stand the attitude of the developer. It's better to act like Blizzard - no promises, no dates, no leaks until the game is at least 99% done.

Quake Live: Excellent

I've been thinking of what should I play after completing King's Bounty: Legend but didn't come to a conclusion. Meanwhile, a friend of mine ask me to play with him this weekend so I couldn't disagree. He said that we can play StarCraft or Quake Live but we have been playing Quake Live only, so far. Like in the old days of the past, two or three years ago, when we used to spend whole weekends playing these two titles. Madness.

I will play Quake Live for the next couple of days. A few things changed since beta, when I played it last time.

King's Bounty: Legend completed! The game was great, requiring, addictive and interesting. Pity that the end didn't give me as much satisfaction as it should, considering the time I spent playing. Oh, whatever.

I don't know what to do now. I'm a busy man until the end of September so my time I can spend playing is limited. I have been thinking about King's Bounty: Armored Princess but people say that it is also very time-consuming. MineCraft 1.8 is said to be out in two weeks but I doubt I can wait that long not playing anything. And today Legia Warsaw - my favorite football team - won against Spartak Moscow and that created an appetite for a journey with Football Manager 2011. Which is the king of time-consuming. Poor me...

MineCraft 1.8: closer and closer

Between 26th and 28th of August there's gonna be the PAX Prime festival which is a heaven for all computer gaming nerds. They have tournaments, discussions, presentations, concerts and more there. Pretty cool, huh? But what is most important for me, Mojang - the company standing behind MineCraft - will be there. And according to their announcement they will present the newest version of their product. I'm really excite about that and there is no way I won't follow it.

PAX Prime will be the first chance to see the adventure update. Mojang said that they want to hear the opinion of the people who will have a chance to check it up and then implement whatever they will find interesting. This means that after somewhere around one week later we - the normal people - should get the update in our hands. Can't wait!

King's Bounty: Legend

My xFire profile says that I spent almost 40 hours playing King's Bounty: Legend last week and what I can add to that is that it was a good experience. And more will come because I haven't finished the game yet.

As I wrote in my last post, not so long ago I found Tomb Raider: Legend among my games that I purchased with PC-gaming magazines. When I completed the journey with Lara Croft, I thought that I should check the box with games from magazines again and I encountered a few good positions with King's Bounty: Legend and King's Bounty: Armored Princess at the forefront. I think that I have all my free time reserved until the end of the month.

The most visible feature of King's Bounty is its similarity to Heroes of Might and Magic III. I must say that I'm a huge fan of Heroes, it's one of the best games ever, to me. I played it for the first time back in 1999, a few weeks after its release and I still turn it on from time to time. Similarities between these to positions are numerous, I'm surprised and pleased at the same time. King's Bounty and Heroes III are very congenial but it's not the same game, King's Bounty is not just a stupid copy of a great artwork of the past, it has its own body and soul. And that's fantastic.

The game is perfectly balanced and addictive. I wasn't bored even for a moment. Units and mobs are great, their special abilities make them unique and it takes a good while to become a specialist in operating them professionally. You also have magic, super interesting but still very simple quests with doze of humor and great world to explore, with all things and creatures you can know for other fantasy games or books. What else do we need?

King's Bounty is a complete and amazing game. Its campaign is like an older and better brother of Heroes III, pity that there are no custom maps. However, I think that this game will keep coming back on my HDD every two-three years. It's a classic!

Tomb Raider: Legend

It's more than a decade since me and Lara Croft have seen each other last time. Tomb Raider III and Tomb Raider: Last Revelation were my only contacts with the sexy lady archaeologist and my memory saved them very positively.

Two or three days ago, in a gaming magazine that I bought two or three weeks ago, I found an article about the new Tomb Raider game that is being produced. I got really interested and I think I will but that game but having Lara Croft on my mind, I remembered that a couple of months ago I bought a magazine with the full version of Tomb Raider: Legend attached. Why not, I thought.

It was a short journey, I must say. I completed the game within 9 hours and that's really not much for me; I'm the type of a guy who likes to see more, go to each mouse hole and make a screenshot, talk with every stranger on my way, admire the views and so on. And there's a lot of things to admire. The graphic is great, even though the game is over 5 years old. And music which fits perfectly. You don't want to rush things up in such circumstances.

Lara Craft has changed. I remember here as a cynical and self confident person with a fantastic body. Now she became a female version of James Bond to me, even the into suggest so. She has friends talking to her all the time via the headset, friends who try to be funny but they are not. Something also changed in Lara's attitude. Not sure how exactly name that but I don't really like it. But she's still sexy!

The game itself is okay but nothing more over that. You have a quest to accomplish, you visit many different locations like Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Peru, England or Japan, you jump, climb and shot. Typical. The scenario isn't really that important, it's about Lara's parents and an ancient sword. Nothing that could impress me. I also think that Prince of Persia is much better, with more options, slightly better atmosphere and the lack of certain nonsense. I can't understand when I can break a glass in one location and it becomes impossible in another. Or that you can use a hook only in places where the designers thought that it will be cool.

In spite of all the game is fun to play. I took it as a light game for a weekend and it perfectly fulfilled its task. I wasn't bored, a few times I authentically opened my mouth in enchantment, the motorbike pursuits which happened twice were exciting, the fights with bosses were pretty demanding and I felt some kind of a small satisfaction after completing the game.

Summarizing, Tomb Raider: Legend was good but not great, I hope that the next episode of Lara's adventures will be better and longer, that there will be more darkness and that Lara will become herself once again. Pity that I have to wait a year for that.

XFire: Hello again

It has been more than a year since I used XFire for the last time, I think. Today, I installed it again, it's such a useful tool, every real gamer should have it. I just love it. I must not forget about it this time, I don't want my long hours playing being not counted. Plus all those screenshots, maaan.

Mass Effect: First Impression

So I spent a while playing Mass Effect, maybe more like 10+ hours. I don't really count. But that doesn't seem much, I have a feeling that I completed about 20% of the game. After that I have mixed feelings. At the beginning I was very disappointed, useless conversations, a lot of walking without a purpose, using an elevator takes almost a minute (can you believe that?). But I'm patient. When I left the Citadel - which is the first stage of the game - and I got more freedom, everything became better. It's still nothing spectacular, I've been expecting the game to be more RPG (what else can you expect from Bioware?) but it's still cool. Let's see how it will end...

Mass Effect: Finally

This is funny. Mass Effect is a very popular game, there are two parts of it and the third one is on its way and I still, even as a fan of RPG games and the atmosphere of galactic battles of the future, haven't been playing it. I bought it almost one year ago, in a nice pack with the "Bring down the Sky" addon and other bonus materials, but after a while completely forgot about it. That's how scatterbrained I can be. A few days ago, accidentally, I found the box with Mass Effect and just laughed at myself.

So, since I took a short break from MineCraft, I will play Mass Effect for next couple of days and hope that it will occur to be at least as good as everybody says.

MineCraft 1.8: so cool, so far away

I'm telling you, I can't wait for it. New mobs, biomes, blocks, NPC villagers, underground constructions, strongholds, farming options and more. This is huge. My main interest is focused on biomes and NPCs. I'm searching thru the Internet to find some new information but everything's so blurry. Although, I slowly begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel of the MineCraft development. But there's also a sad part of this story - most likely the update is not gonna happen within the next month.

Crayon Physics Deluxe: Why?!?

As I mentioned in my previous post, I bought a pack of 5 indie games, namely Humble Indie Bundle #3. One of the games in this pack is Crayon Physics Deluxe. It's a physics puzzle game, you must help a little red ball to reach a star. To do so you draw things: lines, boxes, circles, pins. Anything you want. Sounds like fun, doesn't it?

It's fun but only for a few moments. After, let's say, 20 levels, the game becomes a little boring. You know all solutions, you know how it all works and start to use the simplest way to advance and finish the game as soon as possible. The game has a huge potential but I think it was partially wasted. What a great pity.

Humble Indie Bundle #3

Yesterday, while surfing over the Internet with no purpose I found something really great. It's Humble Indie Bundle, a pack of 5 games made by independent developers which can be purchased at the prize you set by yourself. Amazing. And you can help charity.

Crayon Physics Deluxe, Cogs, Hammerfight, VVVVVV and And Yet It Moves. All pretty cool but Crayon Physics Deluxe seems to be the best for me.

MineCraft is awesome. I play this game for last 2 weeks and can't stop. Basically, I have a feeling that this is the game that I've been waiting for ever. Seriously. Here you are, start with empty hands, the world is yours, with hundreds options, do what you want, create anything you want, your imagination is your limit. MineCraft was created for me.

I remember myself playing other "sandbox" games like GTA: San Andreas or The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. The most exploited aspect of these games by me, was their openness of the worlds, not the scenario. Buying new houses, collecting things which were usually pretty much useless, decorating and so on. And now I get a game that offers me it all, more refined and polished. 

MineCraft is still in the phase of beta testing, although anybody who has purchased the game can play without any restrictions. Multiplayer is aviable and it's great! The developer keeps adding new things with every update and these things are usually big steps of the evolution. New accessories, new blocks, new worlds, new food, new mobs. The list never ends. And what's the best about it, is that the game is an indie game, which gives the hope that the developer won't abandon the project after its official release.

I hope you guys enjoyed this post. I will try to write more about MineCraft and be more specific about it next time. I'm also really interested in the indie games projects lately, so you can expect more write-ups on this topic too.
